Meet the Founders and Designers

Meet the founders, husband and wife Danny and Mandy Welch. Their journey started many years ago when they first walked world renowned Kaanapali beach on the Hawaiian island of Maui. They dreamed of a life where they could spend more time playing, working, and living together in paradise. A few years later they made the trek up to the Canadian North. The winters were long and they spent many nights apart while Danny was getting started in his career as a bush pilot. They spent many hours brainstorming like pinky and the brain coming up with ideas on how to take over the world. Mandy naturally began taking a part her old jewelry and refurbishing them into new designs. She presented Danny the idea of starting a Jewelry business and Pachulah was created. Perhaps it was the frigid cold that pushed them over the edge, but as soon as they had an opportunity to open their first Brick and Mortar location back in their home town of Victoria British Columbia Canada, they jumped on it. They packed up their F250 truck, which Danny built a canopy out of plywood and ratchet straps,  and hit the open prairie roads back to Victoria to begin their next adventures as entrepreneurs. It wasn't much more than a few months after they arrived in Victoria, they had opened Pachulah at Uptown Shopping Centre.

From the start, creating and designing jewelry was Mandy’s passion.  As a young girl, she was completely enamored by all gemstones - their meaning, their history, their sparkle.  She later attended the Victoria College of Art where she was engulfed by the atmosphere that embraced her creativity. She learned design composition strategies, focused strongly on aesthetics, and fell in love with the way the jewelry made her feel and the confidence it brought her.  She hopes her pieces bring consumers that same confidence, and empowers them to embrace their unique beauty.

Mandy aims to accentuate everyone’s natural beauty rather than distract from it.  Her design philosophy is to create dainty yet daring pieces that catch the eye.

When asked about why she was so drawn to Jewelry, Mandy responded with "I guess you could say it all started when me and a friend of mine used to climb up onto my roof and carve designs out of soapstone. I remember being fascinated by gemstones and carvings at at a very young age.. Years later when I went to art school at the Victoria College of art, I developed a need to create. First it was paintings. Believe it or not but a few months into our relationship Danny had already contacted a few well established art galleries in the Victoria area who were willing to carry my paintings. But I knew something just wasn't quite right, and now here we are. Jewelry design and fashion was what we were meant for." - Mandy

Prior to starting a business with his wife Danny was an aspiring athlete that attended the University of Dayton, represented Team Canada at the World University Games in Tokyo Japan, and was fortunate enough to sign professional contract with the Oakland Athletics. Soon after he suffered an injury to his throwing arm tearing his ulnar collateral ligament and decided to move on a pursue a career in Aviation. While working as a pilot, Danny also worked for his uncles construction company gaining the experience and confidence to renovate a few houses of their own with the help from friends and family. Danny and Mandy now also run a thriving AirBnb business called the Rainforest Retreat which is a beautifully situated, newly renovated home nestled in amongst the west coast rainforest in North Saanich BC.

"Moving away together was the best thing that ever happened to us, we bought and sold our first two pieces of real estate and the things you learn while aspiring to be a bush pilot is invaluable. We also realized how much we hated spending time apart so we knew we needed to make a change. I don't know a better team when it comes to running a business. Mandy is such a natural with branding and design and I find myself problem solving day in and day out. Believe it or not but I too have always been interested in design, I use to cut my belts apart and use leather shoe strings to make bracelet cuffs that I would wear and sell to friends back in middle school!" - Danny

Since January 2016 when these two lovebirds opened their first brick and mortar location, they have now expanded in just four short years into an international lifestyle brand, with their flagship location at International Market Place in Waikiki Hawaii. Now they live within walking distance to their shop in paradise and give huge credit to all the wonderful people they've had around them to help grow Pachulah to what it is today. They will never forget their magical times in the cold Canadian winters, but are also very excited for the future. Pachulah may still be considered a small business right now, but they have big dreams of going global. Welcome to our world, welcome to the world of Pachulah
